Court Line - the company and its ships

Halcyon Loch

Halcyon Loch is included in the list of Court Line Ships based on references to it in the various External References, but currently it is not clear what connection Court Line had with her other than that the Halcyon prefix was used by Court Line for its tankers.

She had a working life starting in 1964, and continuing until at least 1983 and was broken up in 1984. She changed names and owners on many occasions and was involved in a serious collision in 1980.

Service History

Little is known of her service history apart from the several changes in ownership and names.

She was involved in a collision in 1980 at Canakkale with the livestock carrier Pezzata Rossa which sustained serious damage forward.

No information has been discovered about the final disposal of this ship and if any reader has information about this they are invited to contact this site (contact details on Home Page) so that this entry can be updated.

Unusually there is nothing about her on the Miramar website under any of her names or her official number.

Tim Hudson provided the following information on reading the original entry:

I joined as chief engineer in Marcus Hook on the Delaware river in February 1975, as Court Line went into liquidation. My employer, Common Brothers had taken over management of the ship on behalf of the owners who I believe were Bankers Trust of New York. She was immediately renamed Woodburn , a name used for many years in Common Brothers. The Capt was Cliff Southcombe from South Shields.

I think we did a couple of voyage charters to Hudson River ports (Newburgh) from the Hess refinery in St. Croix Virgin Islands. Had problem with the boiler tubes whilst at anchor Stapleton Anchorage (New York Harbour) and consequently finished up in Bethlehem Steel's yard in Hoboken for a couple of weeks.

A cargo was taken from the Caribbean to Flushing and the ships went to lay up in Molde Norway, early summer 1975, where she spent a considerable time (Years?) with a Common Brothers skeleton crew. I remember helping with the docking list as she came out of layup but not the date.
