There is an account of a voyage on Adula in 1941 by Stan Mayes on the Benjidog Recollections website HERE.

Conversion to a Merchant Aircraft Carrier

Adula was one of a number of Rapana Class tankers that were converted into Merchant Aircraft Carriers with the purpose of providing a base for aircraft protecting convoys. The other members of the class that were converted were Rapana, Ancylus, Acavus, Alexia, Amastra and Miralda.

Adula's conversion was carried out by Silley Cox at Falmouth and completed in February 1944. She is believed to have carried four aircraft - probably Fairey Swordfish.

Fairey Swordfish
A Fairey Swordfish armed with a single torpedo. The technique used was to dive from 1,500 metres and release the torpedo at 15.5 metres. Although the aircraft was outdated, its short take-off speed made it highly suitable for this purpose. [3]

Service post WW2

After WW2, Adula went back into service as a tanker with Anglo Saxon Petroleum and remained in service with the same company until she was taken to be broken up in 1953.
