Service in WW2

Convoys

In August 1939 Biscaya was interned at Las Palmas while en route from Hamburg to Port Arthur, Texas. On 19 October 1939, the captain attempted to reach Germany but was stopped in the Denmark Strait (which is between Iceland and Greenland) by Armed Merchant Cruiser (AMC) Scotstoun - ex Anchor Liner Caledonia - whose Captain was S.K. Smyth, RN. The Chief Engineer of Biscaya wanted to scuttle the ship, but her Master refused to allow it as he did not want to risk gunfire from the AMC. She was escorted into Leith and taken over by the Ministry of War Transport who renamed her Empire Unity and put her under the management of Hunting & Sons Ltd of Newcastle.

Empire Unity took part in a very large number of convoys according to information shown in the table below which is provided courtesy of Convoyweb - see External Ref. #4. The table also includes various independent voyages undertaken by this ship during the wartime period.

Stan Mayes sailed on thirteen of the later convoys of Empire Unity and there are accounts of these on the Benjidog Recollections website HERE.

The images above are of the crew list for Empire Unity when Stan Mayes joined her. His name appears at #62 on the list. Stan explained that there are more names shown than crew carried at any one time as the ship was on "6 month articles". Some crew were paid off and others joined during this period. The dates and place of joining are shown in columns 6 and 7 of the log. [5]

Torpedo Attack May 1945

On 5 May 1945 Empire Unity had a lucky escape after being torpedoed off Iceland. Uboat.net - External Ref. #3 has the following account:

At 01.05 hours on 5 May, 1945, U-979 fired a spread of three torpedoes at the convoy RU-161 and hit the Empire Unity 14 miles west-northwest of Akrenes, Iceland. The tanker was struck on the starboard side by two torpedoes, causing the flooding of six tanks. The crew initially abandoned ship, but most soon re-boarded the damaged vessel after she was brought to Hvalfjordur by HMS Northern Spray (FY 129). 12 survivors were picked up by HMS Northern Sky and taken to Belfast.

Service post WW2

I have been able to find only a few details about Empire Unity’s service after WW2. It is known that in 1947 she was renamed Stordale for Storship Transports Ltd, London, that she was sold to Mageolia Naviera (T. Pappadrinitriou), Panama and renamed Mageolia and after 1963 used as static bulk oil storage vessel at Piræus.

As Mageolia she was towed to Burriana in Spain in 1966 and broken up.
