Miscellaneous Ship Histories

Empire Unity

Empire Unity  was launched in 1927 as Biscaya but was captured at the outbreak of WW2 and renamed Empire Unity. She did sterling in WW2 convoys and had an overall service life of 39 years being broken up in 19666. There is further information about some of her voyages on the Recollections section of the Benjidog website HERE.

Service Pre-war

There is no specific information about service before 1939.

According to an account on U-boot.net - Ext. Ref. 4, in August 1939 Biscaya was interned at Las Palmas while en route from Hamburg to Port Arthur, Texas.

On 19 October 1939, Biscaya was attempting to reach Germany but was stopped in the Denmark Strait (which is between Iceland and Greenland) by Armed Merchant Cruiser (AMC) Scotstoun - ex Anchor Liner Caledonia -  whose Captain was S.K. Smyth, RN.

The Chief Engineer of Biscaya wanted to scuttle the ship, but her Master refused to allow it as he did not want to risk gunfire from the AMC. She was escorted into Leith and taken over by the Ministry of War Transport who renamed her Empire Unity and put her under the management of Hunting & Sons Ltd of Newcastle.

Participation in WW2

Empire Unity took part in a very large number of convoys according to information shown in the table below which is provided courtesy of Convoyweb - see  Ext. Ref. #5. The table also includes various independent voyages undertaken by this ship during the wartime period. The shaded boxes indicate in most cases that Empire Unity continued independently after taking part in a convoy.

There are accounts of some of the later convoys on this site HERE from Stan Mayes.

Narrow Escape May 1945

According to Ext. Ref. #4:

At 01.05 hours on 5 May, 1945, U-979 fired a spread of three torpedoes at the convoy RU-161 and hit the Empire Unity 14 miles west-northwest of Akrenes, Iceland. The tanker was struck on the starboard side by two torpedoes, causing the flooding of six tanks. The crew initially abandoned ship, but most soon re-boarded the damaged vessel after she was brought to Hvalfjordur by HMS Northern Spray (FY 129). 12 survivors were picked up by HMS Northern Sky  and taken to Belfast.

On 20 Jun, 1945, the Empire Unity left Reykjavik under tow after temporary repairs and arrived five days later in Methil for permanent repairs.

Service Post WW2

No details are available of Empire Unity’s service after WW2. It is known that in 1947 she was renamed Stordale for Storship Transports Ltd, London, sole to  Mageolia Naviera (T. Pappadrinitriou), Panama and renamed Mageolia  and after 1963 used as static bulk oil storage vessel at Piræus.
