| British Military Powerboat Team | This site is dedicated to British miltary powerboats that were formerly looked after by the British Military Powerboat Trust which has now merged with the Portsmouth Naval Property Trust. It is concerned with the preservation and restoration of historic military craft. The site includes boat histories and photos. |
| Canberra | Website dedicated to SS Canberra with the history, photos, plans and anything else you might like to know about this ship. |
| Coasters Remembered | Website dedicated to Coasters - temporarily known as Rock Dodgers following an act of wanton vandalism, but now restored to its former glory. |
| Equasis | Website supported by EU Maritime organisations with information about current ships and shipping companies. You need to register to use it but registration is free. |
| Famous Liners Online | Site specialising in famous ships such as Titanic and QE2, Cunard Liners etc. |
| Fishing Boat Heritage | An ambitious and well-constructed website dedicated to fishing boats throughout the world. It currently contains mostly information about Scottish fishg vessels - though I have no doubt that this will change over time. |
| Flags of the World | More flags than you can wave a flag at, including shipping company flags and pennants. Wikipedia says it has 41,000 pages about flags and 78,000 images of flags. I am prepared to take their word for it. |
| Gallery of Transport Loss | Impressive website with information about losses and accidents with photos and background information. |
| Graphic Design from the 1920s and 1930s in Travel Ephemera | David Levine has created an amazing collection of images of posters from the 1920s and 1930s including a whole section from shipping companies |
| Great Ships | An interesting collection of postcards and other items collected by Jeff Newman and other items of nautical interest. |
| House Flags | A resource provided by the National Maritime Museum with examples of 252 House flags |
| The Internet Archive | You can access over 2 million digitised books which you can locate using the search facilities here. A quick search based on “ships” found over 2,000 hits. The archive grows continuously and if you can't find something to interest you on here you must be brain-dead. |
| Marine Timetables | Images of timetables of ships from many companies going back to the turn of the 20th Century |
| Marine Traffic Worldwide | Map showing position of ships worldwide in near real time hosted by the University of the Aegean |
| MARS | the International Telecommunication Union - Maritime Access and Retrieval System. It has a search facility of all global registered shipping. This system contains characteristics of ship stations, coast and coast earth stations participating in the GMDSS as well as those providing public correspondence |
| Mother of All Maritime Links | John Kohnen has pulled together a very comprehensive list of links. I don't know how up to date it is but I have found many of them extremely userful. It is certainly a good jumping off point if you are struggling to find what you are looking for. |
| Ocean Weatherships | Paul Brooker has produced a website dedicated to the ships that collected data from the Atlantic Ocean used by the Bracknell Weather Centre to produce forecasts until they were scrapped in the early 1980s. The site contains many photos, articles and other information about these vessels and the people that manned them. |
| Paddle Steamer Picture Gallery | Tom Lee has produced a website containing a large number of postcards and photos of paddle steamers. |
| Rangitiki | A website dedicated to RMS Rangitiki, one of the three famous Rangi Boats, from the fleet of cargo/liners of the New Zealand Shipping Company, which sailed in deep water in the golden age of British shipping. |
| Simplon Postcards | Site dedicated to postcards of passenger ships. Also many of ports. |
| Steamboat Museum | Site dedicated to US steamboats. It includes various collections of photos including The Dave Thomson Collection and links to many other steamboat sites and there are a whole load of links to other steamboat-related resources. |
| Tugboat Information | Website dedicated to tugboats and their owners with some excellent photos and company histories. |
| The Tugslist | Piet van Damme has made available his database of tugs which for enthusiasts to download for personal use. It is a large (16.6Mb) Microsoft Access database and you will need suitable software to view it. |
| Tugspotters | Netherlands Website dedicated to tugs with many photos and other information in Dutch which I can't comment on as, although I spent a year working in Amsterdam, I never got beyond ordering beer and a few swearwords. |
