Vessels Lost in WW2 Recorded on the Memorial at Tower Hill

This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website - External Ref. #7.

Athelsultan

She was a 8,882 GRT motor tanker that was bombed by aircraft on 19 February 1941 at a distance of 2.25 miles from May Island on a bearing of 120° but survived. She was attacked again on 22 September 1942 and sunk by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-617 at position 58° 42' N 33° 38' W. The CWGC database contains records for two ships named Athelsultan - one based in Liverpool and one in Grimsby - but they are one and the same and there is only one panel for her on the memorial.

She was a 13,465 GRT passenger/refrigerated cargo ship that was sunk on 3 September 1939 (the day the UK declared war on Germany) by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-30 at position 56° 44' N 14° 05' W. In addition to the crew noted here, 93 passengers were lost - many of the American.

The sinking of this ship was probably the most controversial of the war. I have created a website dedicated to this vessel as part of the Benjidog Historical Research Resources which includes large numbers of press cuttings, photographs and the full story of what happened which can be found HERE.
