Avoceta

She was a 3,442 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship that was sunk on 26 September 1941 by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-203 at position 47° 57' N 24° 05' W. Survivors were aboard Cervantes when she was also torpedoed - see entry HERE.

This vessel is listed as a 290 GRT barge that was sunk by a warship on 29 November 1940 at a position 8 miles off Start Point. The German destroyers Galster, Beitzen and Lody were operating in this area but it is not known which one sank her. Tug Aid was also sunk and French tug Abeille 14 was damaged in the action.
