Vessels Lost in WW2 Recorded on the Memorial at Tower Hill

This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website - External Ref. #7.

She was a 1,600 GRT steam passenger/refrigerated cargo ship that was sunk on 11 January 1941 by a bomb dropped from an aircraft at position 53° 29' N 16° 24' W. It is possible that Mr. Barclay was rescued but lost his life a lot later but I can't confirm this.ah

Beechwood

She was a 4,894 GRT steam refrigerated cargo ship that survived an air attack during which she was bombed and subjected to gunfire on 3 February 1940 at a position 3 miles E of Smith's Knoll light vessel. She was later sunk on 26 August 1942 by German submarine U-130 at position 05° 30' N 14° 04' W. The CWGC database gives Mr. Smith's date of death as 26 August 1942. I have not found out any information about Mr. Jones who died three years later than the sinking of the ship.

Behar

There were two ships of this name that were casualties of the war but cross-checking a sample of the names listed against the CWGC database those below shows that they lost their lives on 18 March 1944 so this was the ship launched in 1943. She was a 7,840 GRT motor cargo ship that was sunk on 18 March 1944 by gunfire from the Japanese Cruiser Tone.

At the beginning of March 1944, the Japanese sent out a small squadron of three cruisers from Singapore to raid shipping in the Indian Ocean. Vice-Admiral Takasu was in overall command, and his orders to his captains were that they take no prisoners. Eighty survivors of Behar were picked up and taken to the cruiser. Here in accordance with orders, 65 of them were killed. The remainder of the prisoners escaped with their lives and, at the conclusion of the war with Japan, information was given to the Allied authorities. Investigations were made and as a result the captain of Tone was tried and sentenced to a long term of imprisonment. Behar was the last Allied merchantman to be sunk by a surface raider in WW2.
