Cameronia to Cape St Andrew

This page has been updated to include basic information about those that lost their lives. The data is by courtesy of the CWGC and I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as well as those lost at sea and recorded on the Tower Hill memorial. She was a 16,280 grt steam passenger/ refrigerated cargo ship that was hit on 22 December 1942 by a torpedo fired by an aircraft at position 37° 03’ N 05° 24’ W.

Canadian Star

She was a 8,293 grt motor refrigerated cargo ship that was damaged on 20 July 1941 by gunfire from German submarine U-126 at position 49° 15’ N 21° 00’ W but survived. She was attacked again on 18 March 1943 and sunk by a torpedo fired by U-221.

The following additional information was provided by Billy McGee: On the 6th February 1942, at a position 800 Miles East of the Pitcairn Islands during a gun practice on the ships 4.7 inch gun, there was an accidental explosion, killing one of the DEMS gunners outright and mortally wounding one of the crewmembers, an Able Seaman named William E. Llewellyn, who died from severe head injuries an hour later and both were buried at sea.

She was a 3,364 grt steam cargos ship that was sunk on 10 February 1941 by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-52 at position 55° 30’ N 19° 00’ W. The dates of death in the CWGC database appear to be incorrect based on accounts of what happened.

Cape Horn

She was a 5,643 grt motor cargo ship that was attacked on 13 May 1941 by bombs and gunfire from an aircraft. She survived this but was destroyed by a fire and explosion on 28 March 1942 at position 08° 24’ S 08° 46’ W. According to the CWGC database, those listed on the monument died in the 1941 attack.
