Dalblair to Dalmore

This page has been updated to include basic information about those that los, t their lives. The data is by courtesy of the CWGC and I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as well as those lost at sea and recorded on the Tower Hill memorial. In most cases further family information about the individuals is available on the CWGC website - External Ref. #7.



Dalblair

She was a 4,608 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 28 August 1940 by a torpedo fired by Geman submarine U-100 at position 56° 06’ N 13° 33’ W. The survivors were rescued by Alida Gorthon but this ship was sunk by the same submarine a few hours later.

Daldorch

She was a 5,571 grt steam cargo ship that survived the war. According to the CWGC database, the Date of Death of Mr McLellan was 14 February 1941. Please see the entry for him on the Queries and Omissions page under 'Omissions'. I have found no further information about the death of Mr. Dunn.

Dalegarth Force

She was a 825 grt steam cargo ship that was damaged on 28 June 1944 by a gunfire from a shore battery 1 mile SW of Dover. This would have been some time after the initial Normandy landings. Mr. Ellis clearly lost his life in an unconnected event but I have not found out any more about this.

Dalemoor

She was a 5,796 grt steam cargo ship that was damaged by aircraft bombing on 13 June 1941 at position 57° 04’ N 01° 51’ W. Those listed on the Tower Hill memorial lost their lives in this incident. The ship was later sunk by a mine on 15 January 1945 at position 53° 22’ N 00° 50’ E.

Dalesman

She was a 6,343 grt motor cargo ship that was sunk on 14 May 1941 by bombs from German aircraft at Suda Bay Crete. She was later salvaged by the Italians, got torpedoed by the British, was bombed and sunk again but was ultimately recovered by the Royal Navy and returned to her original owner.

She was a 2,774 grt steam cargo ship that was damaged by a torpedo on 20 August 1941 fired by an E-boat at position 53° 11’ N 01° 05’ E.

Dalfram

She was a 4,558 grt steam cargo ship was damaged by a mine on 2 May 1942 at position 34° 10’ S 17° 49’ E. She was sunk on 4 August 1943 by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-181 at position 20° 53’ S 56° 43’ E. Mr. Dobbie seems to have lost his life in an earlier incident but I have not found any details about this.

Dalhousie

She was a 7,072 grt motor cargo ship that was intercepted by German raider Stier on 9 August 1942 at position 20° 22’ S 24° 40’ W. Stier took the entire crew aboard and sank Dalhousie with a torpedo. The crew were transferred to Karl Knudsen on 27 August and taken to Singapore. I don't have further information about the difference in dates of those that lost their lives but presumably several died as POWs.
