Vessels Lost in WW2 Recorded on the Memorial at Tower Hill

This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website - External Ref. #7.

Dumra

She was a 2,304 GRTmotor passenger/ cargo ship that was sunk on 5 June 1943 by torpedoes fired by German submarine U-198 at position 28° 15' S 33° 20' E. As the first torpedo failed to sink the vessel the boats stood by in the hope of returning and effecting temporary repairs but a second torpedo was fired shortly after the boats got away sinking the ship. The Chief Officer Mr. H.T. Graham was taken prisoner. Captain Cripps who had remained on board was blown into the sea by the explosion of the second torpedo. He was picked up but died shortly afterwards. Dumra's motor boat towed the other boats to the St. Lucia lighthouse but her engine was swamped before they could land. At daylight all the survivors landed safely.
