Empire Ability to Empire Beatrice

This page has been updated to include basic information about those that lost their lives. She was a 7,603 grt steam cargo ship that was damaged on 23 October 1940 when bombed by aircraft at Gareloch. She was attacked again on 27 June 1941 and sunk by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-69 at position 23° 50’ N 21° 10’ W.

Empire Baffin

She was a 6,978 grt steam cargo ship that converted to a cable laying ship in 1943 and served as HMS Sancroft. She was used in the PLUTO project which laid a pipeline from the UK to Normandy to support the Normandy landings and survived the war. According to the CWGC database, the Date of Death of Mr. Nesbit was 16 September 1942. Please see the entry for him on the Queries and Omissions page under 'Omissions'.
