Empire Newcomen to Empire Patrol

This page has been updated to include basic information about those that lost their lives. The data is by courtesy of the CWGC and I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as well as those lost at sea and recorded on the Tower Hill memorial. She was a 2,840 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 30 November 1941 by torpedoes fired by an E-boat at a position 5 miles S of Dudgeon Light Cromer.

She was a 7,167 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 13 October 1942 by torpedoes fired by German submarine U-159 at position 37° 50’ S 18° 16’ E.

She was a 484 grt steam tug that was sunk on 22 August 1941 by torpedoes fired by German submarine U-564 at position 40° 43’ N 11° 39’ W. At the time she was sunk there were 6 survivors from Aguila on board - all of them were in when Empire Oak was sunk.

She was a 5,866 grt steam cargo ship that was damaged on 28 September 1940 by torpedoes and gunfire from German submarine U-32 at position 54° 37’ N 21° 30’ W. She later sank at postion 54° 55’ N 22° 06’ W.

Empire Oil

She was a 8,029 grt steam tanker that was damaged on 10 September 1942 by torpedoes fired by German submarine U-659. She was sunk by further torpedoes fired by U-584 at position 51° 23’ N 28° 13’ W. There were no fatalities resulting from this attack, but some survivors rescued by HMCS Ottawa were killed when that ship was sunk on 14 September 1942.

She was a 2,906 grt steam cargo ship that survived the war but was damaged on 20 December 1944 on hitting a mine in the River Seine. According to the CWGC database, Mr Davis lost his life on that date.
