Fishpool to Fort Bellingham

This page has been updated to include basic information about those that lost their lives. The data is by courtesy of the CWGC and I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as well as those lost at sea and recorded on the Tower Hill memorial. In most cases further family information about the individuals is available on the CWGC website - External Ref. #7.



Fishpool

She was a 4,950 grt motor cargo ship that survived bombing by aircraft on 14 November 1940 at position 55° 00' N, 17° 04' W and again on 9 May 1941 at Barrow. She was finally sunk as a result of a third aircraft bombing on 26 July 1943 at Sycracuse in Sicily.

Flimston

She was a 4,674 cargo ship that survived the war. She was damaged on 4 July 1940 by aircraft bombing off Portland. I have found no further information about those that lost their lives over a three year period well after this event.

She was a 3,137 grt steam cargo ship that was reported missing in the North Atlantic on 20 January 1941. It is believed that she was torpedoed by German submarine U-94 at position 61° 14' N, 12° 05' W.

She was a 833 grt hopper barge that survived the war. She was damaged on 9 February 1940 by aircraft bombs and gunfire at a position 4 miles West of Bell Rock.

Fort Athabaska

She was a 7,132 grt cargo ship that was destroyed during the bombing of the harbour at Bari by German bombers on 2 December 1943. The attack had unexpected consequences as one of the ships hit was John Harvey that was loaded with chemical weapons that were to be made ready for retaliation in case the Germans used similar weapons. There were many casualties and the incident was hushed up for many years.

She was a 7,153 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 26 January 1944. She was hit first by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-360 and sunk at position 73° 25' N, 25° 10' E by a further torpedo from U-957.
