Hatasu to Haytor

This page has been updated to include basic information about those that lost their lives. The data is by courtesy of the CWGC and I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as well as those lost at sea and recorded on the Tower Hill memorial. Hatasu

She was a 3,198 grt steam cargo ship that was hit on 2 October 1941 by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-431. The ship's DEMS gunners fought back and the submarine was forced to submerge but later sunk Hatasu on 3 October abiyt 600 miles East of Cape Race.

Hatimura

She was a 6,666 grt steam cargo ship that was damaged on 4 November 1942 by torpedoes fired by German submarine U-132. She was torpedoed again by U-442 and the ship, whose cargo included explosives and incendiary bombs, blew up sinking her at position 55° 28’ N 39° 52’ W. U-132 was struck by debris from the explosion and was sunk with all hands lost .

Hauraki

She was a 7,113 grt motor cargo ship that was captured on 12 July 1942 by Japanese raiders Aikoko Maru and Hokoko Marusank. at position 17° 32’ S 80° 25’ E. The Japanese renamed the ship Hoki Maru and used for as a special transport. According to the CWGC database, the Date of Death of the Master Mr Creese was 31 August 1947. She was a 210 grt motor cargo ship that was last seen on 13 September 1939 on departure from Nieuport. She may have been sunk by a mine laid by German submarine U-17 and is believed to lie at position 51° 07' N, 01° 27’ E though this is not confirmed.
