Hazelside to Heminge

This page has been updated to include basic information about those that lost their lives. The data is by courtesy of the CWGC and I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as well as those lost at sea and recorded on the Tower Hill memorial. Hazelside (1928)

She was a 4,646 grt steam cargo ship that was hit on 24 September 1939 by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-31. The ship attempted to escape at high speed but was stopped with gunfire and finally sunk at position 51° 17’ N 09° 22’ W.

She was a 5,297 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 28 October 1941 by torpedoes fired by German submarine U-68 at position 23° 10’ S 01° 36’ E.

Hektoria

She was completed in 1899 as a 11,985 grt steam Passenger/ refrigerated cargo ship and was converted into a whale factory ship in 1932. I have not ascertained what role she was playing when taking part in convoy ON-127 when she was damaged on 12 September 1942 by torpedoes fired by German submarine U-211. She was sunk later the same day by a torpedo fired by U-608 at position 48° 55’ N 33° 38’ W.
