Knowlton to Kurdistan

This page has been updated to include basic information about those that lost their lives. The data is by courtesy of the CWGC and I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as well as those lost at sea and recorded on the Tower Hill memorial. In most cases further family information about the individuals is available on the CWGC website - External Ref. #7.



Knowlton

She was a 2,068 grt steam cargo ship that survived the war. According to the CWGC database, the Date of Death of Mr. Higham was 24 June 1944 but I have not discovered any further information to date

Kohinur

She was a 5,168 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 15 November 1940 by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-65 at position 04° 24’ N, 13° 46’ W. Thirty-one survivors picked up by the tanker Havbør were killed when the tanker blew up after also being torpedoed by U-65.

Kongsgaard

She was a 9,467 grt motor tanker that survived a torpedo attack on 27 June 1941 by German submarine U-564 at position 60° 00’ N, 30° 42’ W. Initially abandoned on fire, she was reboarded, the fires put out and continued to Belfast. She was sunk on 21 February 1942 by torpedoes fired by German submarine U-67 at a position 7 miles off North Point Curacao. See also entry for Panel 132 HERE.
