Stokesley to Strathaird

Stokesley

She was a 1,149 grt steam cargo ship that sank on 24 April 1940 after hitting a mine at position 51° 31’ N, 01° 16’ E.

Stonepool

She was a 4,803 grt steam cargo ship that was damaged on 13 October 1939 by gunfire from German submarine U-42 at position 48° 40’ N, 15° 30’ W. The ship returned accurate fire causing the submarine to dive leaving their gun crew on deck. Stonepool summoned help by radio as the submarine surfaced to rescue the gun crew. U-42 was sunk shortly after by HMS Ilex and HMS Imogen. She was sunk on 11 September 1941 by torpedoes which are believed to have been fired by U-207 which was sunk by convoy escorts so there is no written report of this.

She was a 6,131 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 13 September 1942 by German submarine U-594 at position 48° 18’ N, 39° 43’ W.

She was a 2,134 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 2 November 1943 by a torpedo fired by an E-boat near C1 Buoy Hastings.

She was a 785 grt motor cargo ship that was sunk on 23 August 1941 by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-201 at position 40° 43’ N, 11° 39’ W.

She was a 4,252 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 13 October 1942 by a torpodo fired by German submarine U-706 at position 54° 25’ N, 27° 42’ W.

She was a 4,703 grt steam cargo ship that was sunk on 1 October 1943 by Japanese submarine I-10 at position 11° 43’ N, 48° 07’ E.

She was a 573 grt steam cargo ship that capsized on 3 January 1945 3 miles North of The Longships lighthouse.

She was a 4,753 grt steam tanker that was sunk on 26 September 1940 by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-137 at position 54° 50’ N, 10° 40’ W.

She was a 22,548 grt steam Passenger/ refrigerated cargo ship that survived the war. According to the CWGC database, the Date of Death of Mr Wilson, who was Chief Engineer Officer, was 10 January 1942.
