Discovery of the Athenia Manifest
During a visit to the National Archives at Kew in March 2023 I discovered a file that contained a copy of the manifest from Athenia which, to the best of my knowledge, has not been published before. The manifest was in Admiralty File 260/39 which also contained various documents that I have added elsewhere on the site. I took photographs of all 33 pages of the manifest and you can see them below. I have enhanced the photographs as much as I could but the originals were very stiff and I had to be very careful handling them to avoid causing damage as the pages were very thick and inflexible.
The Manifest
The range of items declared on the manifest is quite interesting and includes clothing, steel, machinery, fishing nets, trade samples, whiskey, yarn, stationery, firebricks, books, electrical equipment, golf balls, tartan, twine and household goods.
