The Fleets
This page covers Hain Steamship Company, Hain Line and the Hain-Nourse Line.
The Hain Steamship Company was formed in the small fishing port of St. Ives, Cornwall and grew to become one of the major shipping companies of the 19th century. Their first venture into shipping came in 1816 with a part share in the fishing lugger DASHER, in 1838 the schooner CAMILLA was purchased and the schooner MYSTERY was bought in 1850. Trade was initially to the Mediterranean with cured fish, returning with dried fruit but soon diversified to the West Indies sugar and Brazilian coffee trades. By the 1860s, Hain's ships were trading worldwide.
In 1878 the company ordered their first steamship and rapidly expanded until 1917 when the company was purchased by P&O; Line who promptly sold 50% to British India S.N. Co. However, Hain Line was kept as a seperate entity within the group and management remained with the Hain directors. In 1923 the Mercantile SS Co (J.& C. Dunkerley) was taken over and the fleet of Frank C. Strick the same year.
In 1964 the P&O; group amalgamated Hain with the Nourse Line under the name Hain-Nourse Ltd. In addition to the Nourse fleet, the Asiatic S.N. Co. was also acquired. In the 1970s, all ships were allocated to P&O; cargo division and the Hain name disappeared.
Note: According to 'Hain of St. Ives by K. O'Donoghue and H. Appleyard', with the introduction of their first steamship, Edward Hain decided that it was time to standardise the naming system of his fleet. In electing to use the prefix TRE meaning "the place of," homestead or dwelling place in the old Cornish language, he was able to utilise the names of a wide variety of Cornish villages, farms and also some of the county's noted families and their estates.
Many thanks to Ted Finch for his assistance in collecting this data. The following list was extracted from various sources. This is not an all inclusive list but should only be used as a guide.
