The Fleets

Sicula Americana was formed in Messina in 1906 to operate cargo and passenger services between Sicily, Southern Italy and New York. Following the Messina earthquake of 1908, the company moved to Naples and calls at Messina were discontinued until 1911. Sicily to South America sailings commenced in 1912. Navigazione Generale Italiana purchased the majority of the company's shares and formed Transoceanica Societa Italiana di Navigazione in 1917 which absorbed Sicula Americana. A new company with the name Sicula Americana was formed in 1919, but apart from the name, there was no connection between the two companies.
