The Fleets
Founded in 1887 with the small ship Normand. Frank Strick then formed the London and Paris SS Co. and in 1889 started the Anglo-Algerian SS Co. to carry coal from South Wales to Northern France. The service expanded to Mediterranean ports, returning with iron ore and in 1892 a new company, the Anglo-Arabian and Persian SS Co. was formed to operate between the UK and Persian Gulf ports. The basis of this trade was delivering bunker coal to Bushire and Basrah for vessels, mainly on the Persian Gulf - India service.
In 1905 Anglo-Algerian and Anglo-Arabian & Persian SS Co.'s merged and in 1913 this became Strick Line Ltd. A twice monthly liner service to the Gulf was started in 1909 with accommodation for up to 20 passengers. Tween decks were also fitted to accommodate pilgrims for Mecca to the port of Jeddah. The same year, Frank Strick formed another new company, La Tunisienne Steam Navigation Co. to operate in the Mediterranean trade. In 1919 controlling interest in Strick Line was sold to Gray, Daws & Co. which was controlled by Lord Inchcape, chairman of P & O. and in 1923 the company was sold to Hain Line. Stricks kept control of La Tunisienne S.N. Co. and in 1928 an association with William Cory & Sons was formed to operate Cory & Strick Ltd which joined La Tunisienne in the Mediterranean coal and iron ore trade. In 1943 Cory & Strick was dissolved and Frank Strick died the same year aged 94 after 58 years in the shipowning business.
In the early 1950s, the coal trade declined and the ships of La Tunisienne were sold and the company closed. The Gulf business continued, but in 1971 P & O Line formed their general cargo division and ships from the constituent companies were gradually transferred to the parent company. By 1975 the last Strick ship was transferred, the name of Strick disappeared from the shipping business and all the remaining ships were renamed with STRATH___ names.
