In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Lancastria

She was a 16,243 GRT steam Passenger/ cargo ship that was sunk on 17 June 1940 by aircraft bombing at position 47° 08' N, 02° 20' E (near St.Nazaire).

Lancastria was taking part in Operation Ariel - the evacuation of British nationals and troops from France shortly after the Dunkirk evacuation. She had on board an unknown number of people - estimates range between 4,000 and 9,000 - when bombed by Junkers 88 aircraft. After three direct hits the ship was leaking oil which ignited.

Some survivors drowned and others choked by the oil or were killed by strafing from aircraft. There were 2,477 survivors. News of the sinking was suppressed by the UK government but leaked out when the story was broken by the New York Times. The Master of Lancastria Rudolph Sharp survived and was in command of Laconia - see entry HERE when she was sunk.
