Vessels Lost in WW2 Recorded on the Memorial at Tower Hill

This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Ramb IV

She was a 3,676 GRT motor refrigerated cargo ship that, according to Wikipedia, was converted to a hospital ship by the Italians and renamed Aquileia. She was captured by the British in 1941 and presumably given back her former name. She was bombed and severely damaged by German aircraft on 10 May 1942 in the Alexandria Channel and later scuttled by gunfire from a Royal Navy ship at position 31° 17' N, 29° 23' W. Of the 360 on board, 155 wounded men and 10 crew were lost. The ship was fully loaded with wounded from Tobruk.

She was a 16,733 GRT motor Passenger/ refrigerated cargo ship that was sunk on 27 November 1940 at position 36° 43' S, 175° 25’ W - about 320 miles of East Cape New Zealand. She was one of a number of vessels attacked by three German raiders Komet, Orion and Kulmerland, disguised as Manyo Maru, Maebasi Maru and Tokio Maru respectively. The attack took place at 3.47 am with gunfire which blew away the bridge and destroyed communications with the engine room. A torpedo then set the ship on fire but the Wireless Operator had managed to get a message away and aircraft were sent from New Zealand. The survivors rapidly taken aboard German vessels which speeded off. They were treated reasonably and later landed on the island of Emirau and rescued some time later. The entire action was rather confused and a long story. She was sunk by gunfire and torpedoes. See RMS Rangitane [10] for more information.
