Losses in WW1

Adansi was a 2,644 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by A.McMillan & Son Ltd. for British & African Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and managed by Elder Dempster & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 6 May 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-21 at position 50° 40' N, 11° 05' W - approximately 80 nautical miles from Fastnet. She was en route from Sierra Leone to Liverpool with a cargo of foodstuff.

Addah was a 3,149 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1904 by Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Co. Ltd, for British & African Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and managed by Elder Dempster & Co. She was sunk on 15 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-69 at position 47° 24' N, 05° 00' W - approximately 35 nautical miles South-West of Penmarch. She was en route from Montreal to Cherbourg with a general cargo.

Adela was a 655 GRT compound-engined passenger/cargo ship completed in 1878 by H. Murray for Tedcastle, McCormick & Co. of Dublin. She was sunk on 27 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-100 approximately 12 nautical miles North-West of The Skerries. She was en route from Dublin to Liverpool with a general cargo.

Captain Tyrrell and seven other crewmen managed to get clear in the ships boats but three of them were washed overboard and four died of exhaustion. Only the captain survived.

Adenwen was a 3,798 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1912 by Bartram & Sons for W.& C.T.Jones SS Co Ltd. of Cardiff. She was sunk on 25 March 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-65 at position 52° 36' N, 05° 37' W - approximately 6 nautical miles South-East by East of the Aklow light vessel. She was en route from Cienfuegos to Liverpool via Queenstown with a cargo of sugar. She had survived an earlier attack by UC-65 on 11 March 1915.

Adriatic was a 3,028 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1904 by Irvine for W.H.Cockerline & Co of Hull. She went missing after sailing frolm Newport on 31 October 1916 bound for Marseilles with a cargo of coal.

There were no survivors

Afric was a 11,948 GRT steam passenger/cargo (ref) ship completed in 1898 by Harland & Wolff for Ismay Imrie & Co. (White Star Line).

She was torpedoed by German submarine UC-66 on 12 February causing major damage and the death of the engineers and greasers who were on duty at the time. The rest of the crew escaped in boats and the submarine sank the ship by gunfire at position 49° 59' N, 04° 18' W. She had been en route from Liverpool to Devonport and Sydney with a general cargo.

This Africa was a 1,038 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1903 by Earle's SB & E for Bennett Steamship Co. Ltd. of Goole. She was sunk on 16 September 1915 at a position 2.5 nautical miles South of Deal by a mine laid by German submarine UC-6 whilst carrying a general cargo from London to Boulogne.

African Monarch was a 4,296 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1898 by Swan & Hunter for Raeburn & Verel as Osborne and renamed African Monarch in 1905. She sank after striking a mine at a position approximately 9 nautical miles South of Cape Orlov near the entrance to the White Sea.

African Transport was a 4,482 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by Northumberland Shipbuilding Co. for Empire Transport Co. Ltd. and managed by Houlder Bros. & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 25 June 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-88 approximately 3 nautical miles North of Whitby. She was on route from the Tyne to Falmouth with a cargo of coal.
