This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Aparima

Aparima was a 5,704 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1902 by William Denny & Bros. for Union Steamship Co. of New Zealand Ltd. She was sunk on 19 November 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-40 at position 50° 29' N, 01° 58' W - approximately 6 nautical miles from Anvil Point. She was sailing in ballast from London to Barry where she was due to take on coal. This was one of New Zealand's worse shipping losses in the war and 17 of 30 cadets on board were amongst those lost.

Arabie

As far as I am able to ascertain,Arabie was a 613 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1899 by Robert Craggs for Manchester Liverpool Line as Albatross and renamed Arabie and owned by Plisson & Co. in 1915. She survived the war and I have found no information about how Mr McLoughlin lost his life.

I do not currently have a useable photo of the memorial panel but will add this as soon as possible.

Mr.Duncan and Mr. Hartnell lost their lives in June 1917 but I have no information about how this happened. As both were engineers it is possible that they were killed in some kind of engine room accident but this is just speculation on my part.
