Vessels Lost in WW1: Arcadian to Argentina
This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].
Arcadian
Arcadian was a 7,945 GRT steam passenger ship completed in 1899 by Vickers, Sons & Maxim for Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. She was in use as a troopship when sunk on 15 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-74 at position 36° 50' N, 24° 50' E - approximately 26 nautical miles North-East of Milos Island. She was en route from Salonica to Alexandria and 279 lost their lives including passengers.
One account says:
The troops had just completed boat-drill when a submarine approached unseen and discharged a torpedo which inflicted such extensive damage that the vessel sank in six minutes. Fortunately the men's recent exercise at the boats imparted steadiness and confidence and 1,058 were rescued, either through their own efforts or by the escorting destroyer...... A considerable amount of wreckage and spars were sucked down and this, coming to the surface with great force, killed many who were swimming in the water.
I do not have a complete set of images for this vessel at present but will add them at a future date.
