Losses in WW1

I have been unable to find any information about either Argentine or Mr. Gibson or how he lost his life. It is possible that Argentine was a sailing barge of 99 GRT completed in 1913 in Canning Town for the British Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd. It is noted that Mr. Gibson's rank is recorded as 'skipper' suggesting a fishing vessel or sailing barge.

Argyll (Hull) was a 280 GRT fishing trawler completed in 1906 by Mackie & Thomson for the Great Northern Steamship Fishing Co. Ltd. of Hull. She was sunk on 15 June 1915 by a mine laid by German submarine UC-11 at a position approximately 12 nautical miles East-South-East of Harwich.

Argyll (Newport) was a 3,547 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by W.Doxford & Sons for Sutherland Steamship Co. Ltd. From 1915 she was owned by Routhi Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Lykiardopulo & Co. She was sunk by a torpedo from German submarine U-84 on 13 April 1917 at position 49° 23' N, 09° 07' W - approximately 110 nautical miles West of Bishop Rock. She was sailing from Port Kelah to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore.

Armadale was a 6,153 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1909 by Charles Connell & Co. for Australind Steam Sailing Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 27 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-60 approximately 160 nautical miles North-West of Tory Island. She was en route from Manchester to Salonika carrying troops and stores.

Armenian was a 8,765 GRT steam passenger/cargo shop completed in 1895 by Harland & Wolff for F.Leyland & Co. Ltd. and managed by White Star Line. She was being used for transportation of horses to France from 1914. She was approached by German submarine U-24 and attempted to escape but was captured.

Those on board were allowed to escape and the submarine sunk the ship with two torpedoes fired into the stern at position 56° 14' N, 11° 30' W on 28 June 1915. Overall 29 people lost their lives as well as the cargo of 1,400 mules. Many of those died were American and this caused a diplomatic incident.

Armonia was a 4,996 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1891 by Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering C. for Canada Steamship Lines Ltd. of Montreal. She was sunk on 15 March 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-67 at position 42° 33' N, 04° 46' W - approximately 38 nautical miles from Porquerolles Island. She was en route from Genoa to New York in ballast.

Arndale was a 3,557 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by R. Thompson for T.Smailes & Son's Steamship Co. Ltd. She sank on 11 June 1915 after stiking a mine that is believed was laid by German cruiser Meteor at position 67° 00' N, 41° 32' E. She was en route from Cardiff to Archangel with a cargo of coal.

Aros Castle was a 4,460 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by Barclay, Curle & Co. for Union-Castle Mail Steamship Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 21 November 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-90 at position 47° 19' N, 12° 45' W - approximately 300 nautical miles from Bishop Rock. She was en route from London to Baltimore in ballast.

Artesia was a 2,762 GRT tanker completed in 1887 by Armstrong, Mitchell & Co., Ltd. as Energie for Riedemann Schutte and from 1916 owned by Saxoleine Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Hunting & Son. She was captured on 8 February 1918 by German submarine U-156 at position 34° 30' N, 13° 41' W and scuttled by explosives. She was en route from Cette to New York in ballast. It is presumed that Mr Da Silva died after the sinking but if this is the case it is not clear why his death should be recorded on the Tower Hill memorial. The Captain of the submarine Kapitanleutnant Gansser was included on the list of war criminals drawn up by the British Government for the brutality of the attack on Artesia and other ships.

Artist was a 3,570 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1909 by Charles Connell & Co. for Charente Steamship Co. Ltd. of Liverpool and managed by T & J Harrison. She was sunk on 27 January 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-55 at position 51° 20' N, 07° 00' W whilst en route from Newport to Alexandria with a cargo of coal.
