Asaba was a 972 GRT compound-engined cargo ship completed in 1900 by Caledon SB & E Co. for African Steamship Co. and managed by Elder, Dempster and Co. of London. She was sunk on 6 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-17 position 49° 57' N, 05° 15' W - approximately 2 nautical miles West-South-West of The Lizard whilst en route from Newport to Le Havre carrying a cargo of naval stores.

This Ashdene has been difficult to track down but I believe her to be a 286 GRT cargo ship owned by Isaac W Laing of Sunderland. She was last seen off the Humber on 3 January 1915 en route from London to the Tyne with a cargo of "Notro cake" - whatever that is.

She was en route from New York to Archangel with a cargo of copper, leather and machinery.

Asturias

Asturias was a 12,002 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1907 by Harland & Wolff for Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. and in use as a hospital ship when attacked on 21 March 1917 by German submarine UC-66 approximately 6 miles off Start Point.

She was beached and later salvaged. At the time she was en route from Avonmouth to Southampton having just put ashore about 1,000 wounded; nevertheless there were about 300 on board including many nursing staff. The attack on a hospital ship caused a great deal of controversy.

Athenia was a 7,830 GRT steam cargo ship (ref) completed in 1903 by Vickers, Sons & Maxim for Athenia Steamship Co. Ltd. She was refitted as a 8,668 GRT passenger/cargo ship in 1905 and owned by Anchor-Donaldson Ltd. from 1916. She was sunk on 16 August 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-53 at position 55° 33' N, 07° 23' W - approximately 7 nautical miles North of Inistrahull. She was en route from Montreal to Glasgow carrying passengers and a general cargo.

She was sunk on 3 August 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-71 at position 46° 56' N, 02° 28' W - approximately 3.5 nautical miles North by West of Ile d'Yeu and 2 nautical miles South-West of Bouée des Bœufs. She was en route from Newport to Bordeaux with a cargo of coal.
