Australier was a 3,687 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by Bartram & Sons for Anglier Steamship Co. Ltd. as Aldersgate. She was renamed Australier and by 1918 owned by Lloyd Royal Belge (Great Britain) Ltd. She was sunk on 29 April 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-57 at position 50° 52' N, 00° 58' E - approximately 6 nautical miles South-West by South of Dungeness. She was en route from Bilbao to the Tees with a cargo of iron ore.

Ava was a 5,076 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1906 by William Denny & Bros. for British & Burmese Nav Co Ltd & Burmah SS Co Ltdand managed by zzz & Co. She went missing after sailing and was assumed lost on 26 January 1917. It is assumed that she was sunk by torpedo by this was never confirmed. She was en route from Liverpool to Dakar carrying coal and general cargo.

Avanti was a 2,128 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1912 by Burmeister & Wain of Copenhagen for Det Forenede D/S A/S. by 1917 she was requisitioned by the British Government and managed for the Shipping Controller by Lambert Bros. Ltd. She was sunk on 2 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-59 approximately 4 miles South-East by East of St.Alban's Head. She was en route from Bilboa to West Hartlepool with a cargo of iron ore.

Avon was a 1,722 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1897 by Wigham Richardson for Carron Co. She sank on 9 April 1916 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-7 at position 51° 29' N, 01° 27' E - in the mouth of the River Thames approximately 2.5 nautical miles South-East by South of the Tongue light vessel. She was en route from London to Leith with general cargo.

Avristan was a 3,795 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by Bartram & Sons for Anglo-Algerian Steamship Co. (1896) Ltd. as Imogen and owned by Strick Line Ltd. and renamed Avristan from 1913. She was sunk on 7 December 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-21 at position 47° 13' N, 05° 12' W - approximately 14 nautical miles from Ushant. She was en route from Portland to London with a cargo of wheat.

Axminster was a 1,905 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1891 by Ropner & Son for Erlebach Livingston. She sank on 13 November 1917 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-4 at position 52° 26' N, 01° 48' E - off Lowestoft. She was en route from Blythe to Dieppe with a cargo of coal.

Axwell was a 1,442 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1909 by J.Crown & Sons for Furness, Withy & Co. Ltd. and from 1913 owned by Broomhill Collieries Ltd. and managed by H.Coates. She was sunk on 13 November 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-56 approximately 3 miles West-South-West of the Owers light vessel. She was en route from Warkworth to Rouen with a cargo of coal.

Aylevarroo was a 1,299 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1903 by Swan & Hunter for Donald Steamship Co. Ltd. and from 1915 renamed Aylevarroo and owned by Limerick Steamship Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 8 October 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-57 at position 51° 45' N, 07° 51' W - off Ballycottin Island. She was en route from Liverpool to Tralee and Limerick with a general cargo.

Aysgarth was a 3,118 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1896 by J.Readhead & Sons for G.E.Macarthy. She was sunk on 14 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-155 at position 42° 50' N, 18° 52' W - approximately 430 nautical miles West-North-West of Cape Finisterre. She was en route from Aguilas to the Clyde with a cargo of iron ore.

Azira was a 1,144 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1907 by Trondhjems Mek. Verks. of Trondheim for H.Gronsdal. By 1917 she was managed by Pelton Steamship Co. Ltd. on behalf of the British Government She was sunk on 4 August 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-22 approximately 6 miles South-East of Seaham Harbour. She was en route from the Tyne to Cherbourg with a cargo of coal.
