This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Ballater

There are inconsistencies in the information in various reference books about this ship. She was a 2,286 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1894 by Harland & Wolff for W.Johnston & Co. Her name was changed to Ballater on transfer to Monroe Rutherford in 1912. It seems that she was in the process of transfer again in 1917 when she was sunk. This was due to be to Haenton Steam Shipping Co., Ltd. with management by J.C.Gould & Co. Ltd. with a name change to Greleen. Reference books mainly list her as Greleen at the time of her loss but the CWGC database has her as Ballater. She was sunk on 22 September 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-40 at position 50° 28' N, 03° 14' W - approximately 7 nautical miles East by North of Berry Head. She was en route frolm Castro Urdiales to the Tees with a cargo of iron ore.
