Losses in WW1

Borg was a 2,128 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1888 by John Blumer & Co. for Commercial Steamship Co. as Hampton. By 1918 she was owned the UK Shipping Controller and managed Cairns Noble & Co. She was sunk on 10 June 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-103 at position 49° 37' N, 05° 07' W - approximately 20 nautical miles South-West by West of The Lizard. She was en route from Bilbao to Jarrow with a cargo of iron ore.

Borga was a 1,046 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1907 by Nylands Verksted of Oslo for A/S Borgaa. At the time she was lost she was operated by the UK Shipping Controller and managed by Mann, MacNeal & Steeves. She was sunk on 1 March 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-55 at position 50° 32' N, 02° 56' W. She was en route from Swansea to Dieppe with a cargo of coal.

Boscastle was a 2,346 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1912 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd. for Hatfield Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by E.Jenkins & Co. She was sunk on 7 April 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-111 approximately 13 nautical miles North-North-West of Strumble Head in St.Georges's Channel. She was en route from Barry to Scapa Flow with a cargo of coal.

Bostonian was a 203 GRT steam trawler (naval) completed in 1919 by Ouse Shipbuilding Co. for the Royal Navy as Samuel Hampton. She was sold to an unknown company in 1919 and renamed Bostonian. She went missing and is presumed to have struck a mine. The CWGC records a date of death of 10 September 1920; another source suggests the vessel went missing two months later - I don't know which is correct.

Boy Jack was a 57 GRT fishing smack completed in 1902 by George & Thomas Smith for Alfred John Turner of Lowestoft. She was stopped by German submarine UB-40 and scuttled with bombs approximately 4 miles East of the Cross Sands light vessel. The crew that survived claimed that the submarine had taken the crew on its deck whilst looting this and another fishing vessel, smashed the lifeboat and submerged leaving them floating in the sea as two British motor launches approached. This was reported in the Evening Post on 18 October 1918.

Boy Percy was a 46 GRT Sailing fishing vessel completed in 1899 by an unknown builder for George R. Warman of Lowestoft. She was stopped and scuttled by German submarine UB-29 off Southwold.

Boy Sam was a 46 GRT fishing vessel completed in 1906 by John Bowden for J.E.Howe and later owned by W.H.Podd of Lowestoft. She was stopped and scuttled by German submarine UB-29 off Southwold.

Boynton was a 2,578 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1892 by J.L.Thompson & Sons for W.& E.S.Lamplough. She was sunk on 25 September 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-47 at position 50° 05' N, 05° 55' W - approximately 5 nautical miles West-North-West of Cape Cornwall. She was en route from Manchester to France with a general cargo.

Braefield was a 427 GRT compound-engined cargo ship completed in 1892 by Scott, Bowling & Co. for Bray Steamship Co. She was sunk on 31 March 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-57 off St. George's Channel Milford Haven. She was en route from Cork to Cardiff in ballast and was posted missing.

Braeside was a 569 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1915 by J.Fullerton & Co. for Wear Steam Sailing Co. Ltd. and managed by Rose Bros. She was sunk on 6 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-71 approximately 5 nautical miles off the Owers Light Vessel. She was en route from Blyth to Jersey with a cargo of coal.
