This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Caledonia (Glasgow)

Caledonia (Glasgow) was a 9,223 GRT steam passenger ship completed in 1905 by D. & W. Henderson & Co. Ltd. for Anchor Line Ltd. and managed by Henderson Bros. Ltd. She was sunk on 4 December 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-65 at position 35° 40' N, 17° 05' E - approximately 125 nautical miles East by South of Malta. She was en route from Salonica to Marseille carrying mail and passengers.

According to Charles Hocking [35]:

The Caledonia was requisitioned by the British Government on the outbreak of war in 1914. Her passenger accommodation in peacetime was for 1,450 persons but her carrying capacity for war purposes was assessed as 3,074 troops and 212 horses. For more than two years she served in various parts of the world but met her fate in the Mediterranean on December 5th 1916. When 125 miles East of Malta she encountered the German submarine U-65, which torpedoed her without warning. The captain, Captain James Blaikie, attempted to sink the submarine by ramming and actually succeeded in striking her.

Capt. Blaikie was taken prisoner by the Germans and his fate would have undoubtably been that of Capt. Fryatt of the City of Brussels had not the British Government let it be known to the German authorities through the US Ambassador at Berlin that a German officer prisoner would be shot in retribution should Capt. Blaikie be executed. This firm attitude impressed the Germans and Blaikie was sent to an officers' prison camp at Friedberg.

Calliope (London) was a 2,883 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1900 by W.Pickersgill & Sons for Calliope Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Petersen & Co. She is believed to have been sunk on 12 July 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-155 approximately 150 nautical miles North of Madeira. She was en route from Sevilla to Newport, Monmouthshire with a cargo of ore. The CWGC database lists the Dates of Death as 9 July 1917 - presumably this was when the vessel was last sighted.
