Losses in WW1

The correct name for this vessel appears to have been Campanola. She was a steam trawler owned by the Isle of Thanet Steam Trawler Company and appears to have been adapted or used for war service but returned to fishing at the end of the war and based at Ramsgate. One account says that she was lost after netting a mine which exploded on 28 January 1920.

Canadian was a 9,301 GRT steam passenger/cargo sheet completed in 1900 by Hawthorne, Leslie & Co. for Frederick Leyland & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 5 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-59 at position 51° 36' N, 10° 48' W - approximately 47 nautical miles North-West of Fastnet. She was en route from Boston to Liverpool carrying horses, grain and general cargo.

Canganian was a 1,143 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1900 by Mackie & Thomson for Canganian Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by O. & W. Williams. She was listed as missing on 17 November 1916 and is presumed to have struck a mine South-East of Montrose. This may have been laid by German submarine UC-29. She was en route from Methil to Scapa Flow.

There were no survivors

Canonesa was a 5,583 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1893 by Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. Ltd. for Furness-Houlder Argentine Lines Ltd. She was damaged on 1 May 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-57 approximately 14 nautical miles South of Worthing. She was en route from Boulogne to Newport in ballast.p>

Canova was a 4,640 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1895 by D. & W. Henderson & Co. for Liverpool, Brazil & River Plate Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and managed by Lamport & Holt. She was sunk on 24 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-105 approximately 15 nautical miles South of Mine Head. She was en route from Bahia Blanca to Liverpool with a cargo of wheat.

Cape Antibes was a 2,549 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1903 by W.Dobson & Co. for Cape Antibes Steamship Co. Ltd. She sank on 21 October 1915 after striking a mine laid by German warship Meteor at position 67° 35' N, 41° 16' E - at the entrance to the White Sea. She was en route from Barry to Archangel.

Cape Corso was a 3,890 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1905 by Russell & Co. for Cape Corso Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Lyle Shipping Co. Ltd.She was damaged on 12 October 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-57 approximately 9 nautical miles West of St. Govan light vessel (near Milford Haven). She was en route from Cardiff to Queenstown in ballast. Although seriously damaged she was towed in, broke her back whilst waiting for the availability of a dry dock but still repaired.

Cape Finisterre was a 4,380 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1907 by Russell & Co. for Cape Finisterre Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Lyle Shipping Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 2 November 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-17 at position 50° 02' N, 05° 01' W - approximately 1 nautical mile South-South-East of the Manacles Buoy Cornwall. She was en route from New York and Falmouth to Brest with a cargo of steel billets.

Cardiff was a 2,808 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1898 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd. for W.G.Morel & Co. She was damaged on 10 January 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-84 approximately 20 nautical miles South-West of L'Orient. She was en route from Cardiff and Brest to St.Nazaire with a cargo of coal.

Carlisle Castle was a 4,299 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by Northumberland Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, for Union-Castle Mail Steamship Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 14 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-57 approximately 8 nautical miles East by North of the Royal Sovereigh light vessel. She was en route from Portland, Maine to London with grain, oil and a general cargo.
