Losses in WW1

Don Arturo was a 3,680 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by Craig, Taylor & Co. Ltd. for Buenos Ayres & Pacific Railway Co Ltd and managed by G.Dodd. She was sunk on 28 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-62 at position 49° 19' N, 08° 28' W - approximately 90 nautical miles West-South-West of The Scilly Islands. She was en route from Algeria and Oran to the River Tees in ballast.

There were no survivors

Don Diego was a 3,632 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by J. Readhead & Sons for Buenos Ayres & Pacific Railway Co. Ltd. and managed by G.Dodd. She was sunk by gunfire from German submarine U-65 at position 35° 50' N, 13° 40' E - approximately 40 nautical miles East by South of Linosa Island. She was en route from Swansea to Alexandria with government stores.

Don Emilio was a 3,651 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by J. L. Thompson & Sons, Ltd. for Buenos Ayres & Pacific Railway Co. Ltd. and managed by G.Dodd. She was sunk on 1 July 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-80 at position 60° 33' N, 02° 08' W - approximately 10 nautical miles North-West by West of the Esha Ness lighthouse. She was en route from Barry to Yukanski Archangel with a cargo of coal.

Donegal was a 1,997 GRT steam passenger ship completed in 1904 by Caird & Co. for Midland Railway Co. She was sunk on 17 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-21 at position 50° 26' N, 01° 00' W - approximately 19 nautical miles South of the Dean light vessel. She was en route from Havre to Southampton and in use as an armed ambulance transport at the time.

Doris Burton was a 197 GRT steam trawler completed in 1914 by Hall, Russell & Co. Ltd.for Davison R. H. & Co. She left Aberdeen on 20 November 1914, was reported missing and presumed to have struck a mine.

Dorothy was a 3,806 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1903 by J. L. Thompson & Sons, Ltd. for John Ness. She was sunk on 24 February 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-35 at position 36° 21' N, 12° 46' E - approximately 25 nautical miles South-East by South from Pantellaria. She was en route from Tunis to Salonica.

Dotterel was a 1,596 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1904 by Swan, Hunter & W.Richardson for Cork Steamship Co. Ltd. She sank on 29 November 1915 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-5 approximately 4.75 nautical miles North by East of Boulogne Pier. She was en route from Manchester and Liverpool to Dunkirk with general cargo.

Dover Castle was a 8,271 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1904 by Barclay, Curle & Co. for Union-Castle Mail Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by D.Currie & Co. She was sunk on 26 May 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-67 at position 37° 45' N, 07° 36' E - approximately 50 nautical miles North of Bona, Algeria. She was en route from Malta to Gibraltar.

Dovey was a 160 GRT steam trawler completed in 1897 by Cook, Welton & Gemmell for Alfred Bannister of Grimsby. She was registered as GY425. She sank on 11 June 1915 after striking a mine whilst fishing in the Outer Silver Pit field, approximately 50 nautical miles East by South from Spurn Head.

Dowlais was a 3,016 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1904 by R.Craggs & Sons for Dowlais Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Morel Ltd. She was sunk on 4 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-48 off Cape de Fer, Algeria. She was en route from Greece and Bona to the Clyde with a cargo of copper ore.
