Losses in WW1

Ella Sayer was a 2,549 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1898 by Tye Iron Shipbuilding Co. for Fisher Renwick & Co. She was sunk on 30 April 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-57 at position 50° 49' N, 00° 48' E - approximately 15 nautical miles East by North of the Royal Sovereign lighthouse. She was en route from Penarth to Dunkirk with a cargo of coal.

Ellen James was a 165 GRT wooden three-masted schooner completed in 1904 by D.Williams of Portmadoc for J.Jones of Caernarvon. She was stopped by German submarine UC-71 on 3 April 1917 and sunk by gunfire West of Ushant whilst en route from Huelva to Pewnyn with a cargo of pyrites.

Ellesmere was a 1,170 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by A. Rodger & Co. for Watson Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed H.Watson & Co. She was sunk on 9 July 1915 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-20 approximately 48 nautical miles South-West of The Smalls, St, George's Channel. She was en route from Valencia to Manchester with a cargo of fruit.

Eloby was a 4,820 GRT steam cargo ship (ref) completed in 1913 by Irvine’s SB. & DD. Co. Ltd. for British & African Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 19 July 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-38 at position 35° 11' N, 15° 38' E - approximately 75 nautical miles South-East by East of Malta. She was apparently being used as a troopship and a significant number of troops lost their lives as well. I have not been able to find consistent figures for this - one source mentions 100 French troops as lost.

Elswick Lodge was a 3,558 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1900 by Richardson, Duck & Co. for Elswick Steam Shipping Co. Ltd. and managed by Weidner, Hopkins & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 20 August 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-93 at position 46° 15' N, 10° 30' W - 260 nautical miles West by South of Ushant. She was en route from Rosario to London with a cargo of maize.

Elterwater was a 1,228 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1907 by Blyth SB & DD Co. for Elterwater Steamship Co. Ltd. She sank on 16 December 1914 approximately 3 nautical miles East of Scarborough after striking a mine laid by German warship Kolberg on the same day. She was en route from Newcastle to London with a cargo of coal.

Elvaston was a 4,130 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by J. L. Thompson & Sons Ltd. for Century Shipping Co. Ltd. and managed by Harris & Dixon Ltd. She was damaged on 15 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-38 approximately 3 nautical miles South by East of Taorima. She was en route from Famagusta to Cett with a cargo of locust beans.

Elve was a 1,087 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1904 by Bremer Vulkan for P.A.van Es & Co. From 1917 she was owned by Ocean Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by A.Holt & Co. She was sunk on 11 October 1917 by gunfire from German submarine U-22 at position 46° 23' N, 11° 19' W - North-West of Cape Finisterre. She was en route from Oporto to London with general cargo.

There were no survivors

Emlyndene was a 495 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1904 by Murdoch & Murray for Michael Murphy as Llandaff. From 1913 she was owned by Emlyn Line Ltd. and managed by Emlyn-Jones & Co. Ltd. She was posted missing on after sailing on 11 December 1917 from Cardiff to Granville with a cargo of coal. It is believed that she was sunk by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-50 East of Start Point.

Emma was a 2,520 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1898 by T. Turnbull & Son for Turnbull Bros. Shipping Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 20 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-50 at position 49° 55' N, 14° 40' W - approximately 200 nautical miles South-West by South of Fastnet. She was en route from Baltimore and fayal to the Clyde with a cargo of maize.
