Losses in WW1

Ethelinda was a 3,112 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1911 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd. for Harrowing Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Robert. Harrowing & Co. She was sunk on 29 January 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-31 at position 53° 29' N, 05° 12' W - approximately 15 nautical miles North-West of The Skerries, Anglesey. She was en route from Bilbao to Barrow with a cargo of iron ore.

Ethelwulf was a 185 GRT steam trawler completed in 1903 by Smith's Dock Co. for an unknown owner. Two trawlers, Ethelwulf and T.W.Mould were fishing with a number of other trawlers from the North Shields fleet when two loud explosions were heard at about 3am on 1 December 1918 and the two boats were engulfed with flames. It is presumed that both vessels struck mines. Ironically, Ethelwulf had been deployed by the navy between 1914 and 1915 as a minesweeper.

Etonian was a 6,438 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1898 by Furness, Withy & Co. for T. Wilson, Sons & Co. as Chicago. By the time of her loss she was owned by Fred. Leyland & Co. Ltd. and renamed Etonian. She was sunk on 23 March 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-61 approximately 34 nautical miles South by East of the Old Head of Kinsale. She had been en route from Liverpool to Boston with a general cargo.

Etton was a 2,831 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1905 by Ropner & Son for Deddington Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by H.Samman & Co. She sank on 20 September 1916 after striking a mine laid by German submarine U-75 at position 67° 36' N, 41° 20' E - at the entrance to the White Sea off Sviatoi Nos. She was en route from Barry to Archangel with a cargo of coal.

Euphorbia was a 3,109 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1917 by W.Dobson & Co. for Stag Line Ltd. and managed by J.Robinson & Sons. She was sunk on 1 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-75 approximately 14 nautical miles East by South of the Royal Sovereign light vessel. She was en route from Bassein to London with a cargo of rice.

Eupion was a 3,575 GRT steam tanker completed in 1914 by Mackay Bros. for Eupion Steamship Co. Ltd. From 1917 she was owned by British Tanker Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 3 October 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-90 approximately 10 nautical miles West of Loop Head, River Shannon. She was en route from Philadelphia to Limerick with petroleum.

Euston was a 2,841 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1910 by J. Blumer & Co. for Euston Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by E. Thomas Radcliffe & Co. She was sunk on 25 October 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-34 at position 35° 33' N, 21° 48' E - approximately 37 nautical miles South-West of Cape Matapan. She was en route from Malta to Mudros with a cargo of coal.

Euterpe (Cardiff) was a 1,522 GRT compound-engined cargo ship completed in 1883 by Stephen & Sons Ltd. for Osborn and Wallis of Cardiff. She was reported as missing having last been seen passing Yarmouth en route from Huelva to Middlesbrough on 7 January 1916 and is presumed to have struck a mine.

Euterpe (London) was a 3,540 GRT triple expansion steam engined cargo ship completed in 1901 by Sir Raylton Dixon & Co. Ltd. for Calliope Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Scaramanga Bros. She was damaged on 1 March 1917 by a torpedo fired by German submarine UB-47 off Suda Bay whilst en route from Oran to Salonika.

Eveleen was a 489 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1891 by Workman, Clarke & Co. for J.Milligen. She sailed from Ayr bound for Belfast on 6 May 1918 and was reported missing.

There were no survivors

Excel was a 50 GRT sailing ketch built in Hull in either 1891 or 1893 and registered at Lowestoft as owned by Peter Moxey of 94 St. Leonard's Road South Lowestoft. Her Official Number was 97929. I can find no specific record of her loss but her registration was closed in 1915. The most likely scenario given the date and location is that she struck a mine and was sunk.
