Vessels Lost in WW1: Excellence Pleske to Farnham
This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Falaba
Falaba was a 4,806 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1906 by A. Stephen & Sons, Ltd. for Elder Dempster Shipping Ltd. and from 1910 owned by Elder Line Ltd. managed by Elder, Dempster & Co. Ltd.. She was sunk on 28 March 1915 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-28 approximately 38 nautical miles West of The Smalls, St. George Channel. She was en route from Liverpool to the West coast of Africa with passengers and a general cargo.
According to Charles Hocking [35]:
... She carried 151 passengers and 96 crew, together with cargo valued at £50,000. At 11:40 on the morning of 28th when 38 miles W of The Smalls lighthouse she sighted a submarine flying the White Ensign but as she came closer this was hauled down and the German naval ensign substituted. The submarine, which was U-28, 870 tons,Cdr. Baron von Forstner, who had sunk the Yeoward liner Aguila on the previous day immediately signalled "Stop and abandon ship". To this signal Falaba paid no attention but increased to full speed. A second signal then came from the submarine, "Stop or I will fire into you". As the U-28 could do 16 knots on the surface, Capt. Davis decided that he had no alternative but to obey as he could not outpace the submarine. He therefore stopped his ship and swung out five of his boats but had not time to do more before the U-28 fired a torpedo at a range of 150 yards. She remained afloat for bareley ten minutes after the explosion. The steam-drifter Eileen Emma, Skipper George Wright, picked up 40 persons, six of whom, including Capt. Davis, died shortly afterwards. The drifter Wenlock, skipper Denis Randleson, rescued another 8 of whom 2 died. Altogether 104 persons perished.
The CWGC database holds records for both a Mr. H. Magnussen and a Mr. H. Magnusson as you can see in the table below. It seems likely that this is the same person and that his body was found and buried and should not have been recorded on the Tower Hill memorial.
