This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Glenart Castle

Glenart Castle was a 6,757 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1900 by Harland & Wolff Ltd. for Union-Castle Mail Steamship Co. Ltd. as Galician and renamed Glenart Castle in 1914. She was requisitioned early in the war as a hospital ship. She was sunk on 26 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-56 at position 51° 03' N, 05° 09' W - approximately 10 miles West of Lundy Island. She was en route from Newport to Brest. She had survived an earlier incident on 1 March 1917 in which she struck a mine laid by UC-65 8 nautical miles from the Owers light vessel.

According to Charles Hocking [35]:

... on February 26th she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC-56 ten miles West of Lundy Island on a voyage from Newport to Brest to embark wounded. Her commander Capt. Burt and 94 of her crew were among the 153 killed out of her total complement of 186.

There is more information on Wikipedia including claims that the ship was very clearly marked as a hospital ship and that the submarine opened fire on survivors of the sinking.
