Losses in WW1

Grecian Prince was a 126 GRT compound-engined trawler completed in 1899 by J.T. Eltringham Ltd. for William Horsley Storey of South Shields and registered as SN4. She sank on 15 December 1918 after a mine caught in her trawl blew up approximately 16.5 nautical miles North by East of Kinnairds Head. Three of the ten on board survived.

Greenbank was a 3,881 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1905 by W. Doxford & Sons Ltd. for Horsley Line Ltd. From 1915 she was owned by G.B.Harland & Co. She was sunk on 3 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-33 at position 36° 05' N, 01° 04' W - approximately 12 nautical miles North of Cape Falcon, Algeria. She was en route from Cardiff to Alexandria with a cargo of coal.

Greenhill was a 1,900 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by Sir Raylton Dixon & Co. Soc Generale des Houilles & Agglomeres as Corneille. By 1908 she was owned by W.J.Tillett Steamship Co. Ltd. and renamed Greenhill. She was wrecked on Long Sand on 16 December 1917 whilst en route from Blyth to Dunkirk with a cargo of coal.

Gregynog was a 1,699 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1899 by S. P. Austin & Son Ltd. for Lambton Collieries and managed by E.T.Nisbet. She was sunk on 18 April 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-86 at position 50° 47' N, 04° 44' W - approximately 16 nautical miles South-West of Hartland Point. She was en route from Penarth to Portland with a cargo of coal.

Greldon was a 3,322 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1903 by Richardson, Duck & Co. for Anning Steamship Co. Ltd. as Dartmouth. From 1915 she was owned by J.C.Gould & Co. She was sunk on 8 October 1917 date by torpedo fired by German submarine U-96 approximately 7 nautical miles East-North-East of the North Arklow light vessel, St. George Channel. She was en route from Birkenhead to an unknown destination with a cargo of coal.

Grenadier was a 1,004 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1895 by Wigham Richardson & Co. for Tyne Steam Shipping Co. She sank on 23 February 1917 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-4 at position 52° 06' N, 01° 42' E - approximately 6 nautical miles East-North-East of the Shipwash light vessel. She was en route from Rotterdam to Newcastle with a general cargo.

Gretaston was a 3,391 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd. for Vauxhall Steamships Ltd. as Vauxhall Bridge. By 1912 she was owned by Gretaston Steamship Co. Ltd., renamed Gretaston and managed by W.S.Miller & Co. She was sunk on 15 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-27 at position 43° 08' N, 11° 32' W - off the Iberian coast. She was en route from Huelva to Garston with a cargo of copper ore.

There were no survivors

Grimbarian was a 146 GRT steam trawler completed in 1894 by Robert Craggs for Thomas B. Roberts of Fish Dock Grimsby and registered in Grimsby as GY.699. She sank on 4 August 1915 after striking a mine approximately 56 nautical miles East by North of Spurn Point.

Groningen was a 988 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1902 by Sir Raylton Dixon & Co. Ltd. for General Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. She sank on 23 September 1915 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-6 approximately 1.5 nautical miles North by East of the Sunk Head Buoy, Thames Estuary. She was en route from Harlingen to London with a general cargo.

Guide has been difficult to track down but I believe that she was a 48 GRT sailing ketch - a trawler - completed in 1897 in Galmpton Devon and transferred to Lowestoft and owned by Samuel Richard White of Raglan Street. She was removed from the register in 1916. Judging by the rank of those lost it is most probable that the entire crew were lost. I have been unable to discover any further information about this.
