Losses in WW1

Hannah Croasdell was a 151 GRT wooden three-masted schooner - a sailing vessel - completed in 1866 by Wilson of Ulverston for A.E.Reney. She sank on 26 February 1917 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-65 approximately 1 nautical mile South of Skokholm Island.

Hans Jost was a 954 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1889 by Flensburger Schiffsbau Ges, for J.Jost. She had been requisitione by The Admiralty and managed by Everett & Newbigin. She sank after the end of the war on 5 May 1919 after striking a mine - possibly off Newcastle. I have not been able to discover further details but it appears that most of the crew were lost.

Harberton was a 1,443 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1894 by S. P. Austin & Son for J.& C. Harrison. She sank on 30 March 1917 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-31 in the North Sea. She was en route from Blyth to London with a cargo of coal.

Harbury was a 4,572 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by Sunderland Shipbuilding. Co. Ltd. for J.& C.Harrison Ltd. She was sunk on 9 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-70 at position 47° 47' N, 09° 16' W - approximately 170 nautical miles West by North of Ushant. She was en route from Buenos Aires to Brest with a cargo of oats and maize.

Hare was a 804 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1887 by Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd. for G.& J.Burns. She was sunk on 14 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-62 approximately 7 nautical miles East of the Kish light vessel. She was en route from Manchester to Dublin with a general cargo.

Harewood was a 4,150 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by J. L. Thompson & Sons Ltd. for Century Shipping Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 13 April 1918 by gunfire from German submarine U-155 at position 37° 10' N, 16° 50' W - approximately 380 nautical miles West by South of Lisbon. She ws en route from New York to Gibraltar with a general cargo.

Harflete was a 4,814 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by Bartram & Sons Ltd. for J.& C.Harrison Ltd. She was sunk on 26 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-70 at position 51° 54' N, 14° 48' W - approximately 200 nautical miles North-West by West of Fastnet. She was en route from Cienfuegos to Queenstown with a cargo of sugar.

Harlington was a 1,034 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by Osbourne, Graham & Co. for Cie Generale d'Anthracite as Figulina. From 1914 she was owned by Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. She sank on 9 December 1916 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-11 approximately 4 nautical miles South-West of the Shipwash ligt vessel. She was en route from Newcastle to London with a cargo of coal.

Harlseywood was a 2,701 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1907 by Ropner & Son Ltd. for Constantine & Pickering Steamship Co. From 1918 she was owned by Joseph Constantine & Sons. She was damaged on 17 July 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-60 at position 50° 46' N, 04° 38' W - South-West of Hartland Point. She was beached but refloated and repaired. When attacked she was en route from Penarth to St.Nazaire with a cargo of coal.

Harlyn was a 1,794 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1915 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd. for Harrison's (London) Ltd. She sank on 9 December 1916 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-11 approximately 4 nautical miles South-West of the Shipwash light vessel. She was en route from Newcastle to London with a cargo of coal.

Harmatris was a 4,863 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1912 by Northumberland Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for J.& C.Harrison Ltd. She was sunk on 8 March 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-18 approximately 0.25 nautical miles North-East by North from the Boulogne Breakwater. She was en route from St.John, New Brunswick to Boulogne with a cargo of oats and hay.
