Hatasu was a 3,193 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1917 by J. Blumer & Co. for Moss Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by J.Moss & Co. She was sunk on 27 September 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-49 at position 36° 32' N, 00° 53' W - approximately 50 nautical miles North by West of Oran. She was en route from Alexandria to Liverpool with a cargo of cotton, currants and onions.

Haverford was a 11,635 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1901 by John Brown & Co. Ltd. for International Navigation Co. Ltd. She was damaged on 26 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-94 at position 57° 01' N, 10° 59' W - off Western Scotland. She was en route from Liverpool to Philadelphia with a general cargo at the time of the attack. She was beached at Kinnegar but later refloated and repaired.

She was en route from Newport via Milford Haven to Malta with a cargo of coal.


The name J.W.Bolam appears two times on the memorial but the CWGC database only has one casualty of this name. He was in fact a member of the RNVR and is commemorated at Chatham so it appears that the name should not appear on the memorial at Tower Hill at all.

Hebble was a 904 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1891 by W. Dobson & Co. for Goole Steam Shipping. She sank on 6 May 1917 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-42 at position 54° 55' N, 01° 18' E - approximately 1.5 nautical miles East of Roker Pier, Sunderland. She was en route from Scapa Flow to Sunderland in ballast.

Hebburn was a 1,938 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1908 by Wood, Skinner & Co. Ltd. for Burnett Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Burnett & Co. She was sunk on 25 September 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-91 at position 51° 40' N, 07° 13' W - approximately 14 nautical miles South of Mine Head. She was en route from Barry to an unknown destination carrying coal and general cargo.

Helcia

Helcia was a 230 GRT steam trawler completed in 1906 by Cochrane & Sons Shipbuilders Ltd. for Northwold Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. She was registered in Grimsby as GY.152. Her owner at the time of her loss was Sylvia Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. She was posted missing on not returning from a North Sea fishing trip on 22 September 1919 and may well have struck a mine.
