This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Hesperian

Hesperian was a 10,920 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1908 by A. Stephen & Sons Ltd. for Allan Line Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Allan Bros. & Co. UK Ltd. She was sunk on 4 September 1915 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-20 approximately 85 nautical miles South-West by South of Fastnet. According to Charles Hocking [35]:

.... At about 8:30 PM she was hit amidships but did not sink for several hours. Thirty-two persons lost their lives but the remainder of the 653 passengers and crew took to the boats and were later picked up be warships which tried to tow the Hesperian to Queenstown. After making some 35 miles she began to sink and Capt. Maine and a small party of volunteers who had remained on board were forced to abandon her 130 miles West of Queenstown. U-20 was the submarine that had torpedoed the Lusitania.
