Highbury was a 4,831 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1912 by Bartram & Sons for Britain Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Watts, Watts & Co. She was posted missing and is believed to have been sunk on 14 June 1917 by German submarine U-82 at position 48° 25' N, 10° 28' W - approximately 100 nautical miles West-South-West of Bishop Rock. She was en route from Antofagasta to Birkenhead with a cargo of nitrate.

She was sunk on 3 September 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-87 at position 51° 56' N, 05° 54' W - approximately 13 nautical miles South-East of Tuskar Rock. She was en route from Glasgow to an unknown destination with a cargo of coal.

Highland Corrie was a 7,344 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1910 by Russell & Co. for Nelson Line (London) Ltd. From 1910 she was owned by Nelson Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and managed by H. & W. Nelson Ltd. She was sunk on 16 May 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-40 at position 50° 28' N, 00° 38' W - approximately 4 nautical miles South of the Owers lighe vessel. She was en route from La Plata to London with a cargo of frozen meat.


Several reference sources state that there were five lives lost but the CWGC only lists Mr. Tennant. It is possible that the other casualties were not British or Commonwealth citizens but this is just conjecture at present.

It is believed that she sank on 20 December 1916 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-32 off Sunderland. She was en route from Bilbao to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore.

Hirano Maru

Hirano Maru was a 8,521 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1908 by Mitsubishi of Nagasaki for Nippon Yusen KK. She was sunk on 4 October 1918 by a torpedo fired by German submarine UB-91 approximately 200 nautical miles south of Ireland whilst en route from Liverpool to Yokohama with a general cargo. The attack took place at 05:00 during a strong gale of the 320 aboard, including 200 passengers, only 28 survived including 11 passengers.

She was reported as having been sunk on 8 June 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-107 at position 54° 51' N, 01° 03' W - off Sunderland, but subsequently the wreck has been located at position 54° 55.443' N, 01° 09.942' W - 6.46 nautical miles East of Roker lighthouse. She was en route from London to Aberdeen with a general cargo.

Holland

It has been difficult to track down Holland but she is shown on the CWGC as a steam trawler based in Boston Lincolnshire. Based on this, the most likely candidate is 145 GRT iron-hulled steam trawler completed in 1885 in Hull and owned by the Boston Deep Sea Fishing & Ice Co. Ltd. Given the date and location it is likely that she was lost to a mine but I am unable to confirm this. The boat was removed from the register in 1916.
