Losses in WW1

Hollington was a 4,221 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1912 by Northumberland Shipbuilding. Co. Ltd. for F.S.Holland. She was sunk on 3 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-95 approximately 14 nautical miles South of the Faroe Islands. She was en route from Liverpool to the White Sea in ballast.

Hollinside was a 2,682 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1905 by Short Bros. Ltd. for Charlton Steam Shipping Co. Ltd. and managed by Charlton, McAllum & Co. She was sunk on 3 February 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-43 approximately 115 nautical miles West-South-West of Fastnet. She was en route from Sunderland to Marseille with a cargo of coal.

Holmtown was a 598 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1907 by R. Thompson & Sons Ltd. for Town Line (London) Ltd. and managed by Harrison, Sons & Co. She was posted missing but was later found to have been sunk on 3 February by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-59 East of The Shambles light vessel. She was en route from Rouen to Penarth Dock in ballast.

Horatia was a 216 GRT steam trawler completed in 1900 by Menzies of Inverkeithing for The Rushworth Steam Fishing Company and registered in Grimsby as GY.1134. She was posted missing on 25 March 1915 and may well have struck a mine though this is not confirmed.

There were no survivors

Hornchurch was a 2,159 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1916 by Osbourne, Graham & Co. for J.Hudson & Co. Ltd. She sank on 3 August 1917 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-29 approximately 3.5 nautical miles East-North-East of Coquet Island. She was en route from London to Methil with a cargo of coal.

Horngarth was a 3,609 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1911 by Robert Thompson & Sons Ltd. for Turnbull Bros. Co. Ltd. She was captured by German raider Seeadler and then scuttled approximately 220 nautical miles East-North-East of St. Paul's Rocks. She was en route from Montevideo to Plymouth with a cargo of maize.

Hornsund was a 3,643 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by Schiffsw. v. Henry Koch for Dampfschiffs Reederei "Horn" AG. From 1914 she was in the possession of the UK Admiralty and managed by Everitt & Newbigin. She was sunk on 23 September 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-71 approximately 2.5 nautical miles East-South-East of Scarborough. She was en route from the Tyne to London with a cargo of coal.

Horsa was a 2,949 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1894 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd. for Herskind & Co. She was sunk on 30 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-93 at position 48° 43' N, 12° 35' W - approximately 195 nautical miles South-West by West of Fastnet. She was en route from Port Briera to Cardiff with a cargo of iron ore.

Horsham was a 406 GRT compound-engined cargo ship completed in 1910 by R. Williamson & Son as Glanoventa. She was sold to Horsham Steamship Co. Ltd. in 1910 and renamed Horsham. The ship survived both WW1 and WW2 and was eventually broken up in 1957 by which time she was named Sneyd. I have been unable to find any information about how Mr. Prigent lost his life.

Howth Head was a 4,440 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by Workman, Clark & Co. Ltd. for Ulster Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by G. Heyn & Sons. She was sunk on 19 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-60 at position 52° 20' N, 13° 38' W - approximately 158 nautical miles North-West of Fastnet. She was en route from New Orleans and Norfolk to Dublin.

Humber was a 280 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1899 by Ardrossan Dry Dock Co. Ltd. for J. B. Knapton. She was sunk on 25 January 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-34 approximately 2 nautical miles East of Sunderland or 4 nautical miles East of the Souter lighthouse. She was en route from Lynn to Dunston with a cargo of wheat.
