Huntstrick was a 8,117 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1902 by Workman, Clark & Co. Ltd. for Irak Steamship Co. Ltd. From 1915 she was under the control of the British Government and managed by F.C.Strick & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 8 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-39 at position 35° 52' N, 06° 47' W - approximately 80 nautical miles West-North-West of Cape Spartel. She ws en route from London to Salonica with government stores and troops.

Newton John Thomas 37 08/06/1917 Chief Motor Mechanic Tower Hill Memorial Husband of Sarah Newton, of 109, Holme Slack Lane, Preston. Mr. Newton was a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and is also commemorated on panel 28 of the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. He was part of the Motor Boat Reserve and served on H.M.M.L. No. 541. He died on board Hunststrick as a result of wounds received in action with a submarine off Tangiers.

From 1915 she was under the control of the British Government and managed by Fisher, Alimonda & Co. She was sunk on 4 November 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-43 at position 36° 04' N, 19° 03' E - approximately 200 nautical miles East of Malta. She was en route from Salonica to Algiers in ballast.

She was sunk on 18 May 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-94 at position 49° 08' N, 05° 00' W - approximately 48 nautical miles South by West of The Lizard. She was en route from Wellington to London with a general cargo.

Hyndford

Hyndford was a 4,286 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1905 by Wm. Hamilton & Co. Ltd. for Scottish Shipowners' Co Ltd. and managed by Robertson, Paterson & Co. She was damaged on 15 March 1915 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-35 approximately 12 nautical miles South of the Royal Sovereign light vessel. She was en route from Bahia to London with a cargo of grain. After repair she survived until being broken up in 1930.

Hyperia

Hyperia was a 3,921 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1895 by J. L. Thompson & Sons Ltd. for Simpson Spence as Pinners Point. From 1903 she was owned by British & South American Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and managed by R.P.Houston & Sons. She was sunk on 28 July 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-52 at position 32° 21' N, 31° 25' E - approximately 84 nautical miles North-West by North of Port Said. She was en route from Marseille to Port Said carrying military stores and troops. Apart from the crew casualties, 57 French servicemen lost their lives in the attack.


Although members of the crew are listed in the CWGC database under Hyperia, the Master, Mr. Way is listed under Naval Transport B. 26 (Hyperia) but it is the same vessel.

Ida Duncan was a 139 GRT Tug that was originally built as a fishing trawler and completed in 1891 by J. P. Rennoldson & Sons. as Sturgeon. By the time of her loss whe was owned by Charles Duncan & Sons Ltd., renamed Ida Duncan and managed by Charles William Duncan. She sank on 31 January 1917 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-32 at position 53° 39' N, 01° 07' E - approximately 1.5 nautical miles East of the South Gare Breakwater near Middlesbrough. She was en route from Middlesbrough to Tees Bay in ballast.
