This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Irene

Irene was a 543 GRT steam Buoy/Lighthouse Tender completed in 1890 by Palmer's Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd. for Trinity House. She sank on 9 November 1915 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-1 approximately 1.5 nautical miles East-South-East of the Tongue light vessel in the Thames estuary. She was en route from Harwich to London.

Iris

Iris has proved difficult to identify. I believe that she was a 75 GRT sailing ketch completed in 1877 or 1878 by Hoad Bros. of Rye for Francis Pim of Poole. She was registered at Poole and the Register was closed in 1917. She went missing and may have been sunk by German submarine UC-26 of Cherbourg. The submarine claims to have sunk a sailing vessel on 8 May 1917. This is unconfirmed.

Isle of Man

Isle of Man was a 176 GRT steam trawler completed in 1905 by Earle's Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. for The Hull Steam Fishing and Ice Co. Ltd. and registered in Hull as H.826. She has been in service from 1914 as a minesweeper but I presume she had been returned to her owners for use as a fishing vessel by the time she was lost. She was reported as missing on 14 December 1917 and it seems likely that she struck a mine.

Ivernia

Ivernia was a 14,058 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1900 by C. S. Swan & Hunter Ltd. for Cunard Steamship Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 1 January 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-47 at position 35° 30' N, 22° 53' E - approximately 58 nautical miles South by East of Cape Matapan. She was operating as a troopship.

According to Charles Hocking [35]:

The liner Ivernia, commissioned as an auxiliary transport, was torpedoed and sunk on Jan 1st 1917 58 miles SE of Cape Matapan when on hyer way to Alexandria. At the time of the attack the Ivernia was carrying about 2,400 troops of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, Royal Scots Fusiliers, Rifle Brigade and Yeomanry. Of these three officers and 82 other ranks were drowned. The ship's surgeon, the chief engineer and 34 of the crew were also drowned.

The submarine responsible for the sinking was the UB-47, which was one of the craft sent from Germany to the Mediterranean in sections and assembled at Pola. She was commanded by Lt. Cdr. Steinbauer who had torpedoed the Frence battleship Gaulois a few days previously.

Mr. Morley and Mr Phillips are incorrectly recorded as serving on Ivemia in the CWGC database. Also John Owen Jones has a different Date of Death to his fellow seamen. Reported to CWGC 14 May 2020.

Ivy

Ivy is another fishing vessel that has been hard to identify. The CWGC database lists her as a trawler based at Lowestoft. The best match I can find is a 83 GRT steam trawler completed in 1907 at Oulton Broad by an unknown shipbuilder and owned by Richard W. Ratcliffe of Lowestoft. I believe that she sank after hitting a mine in the North Sea but this is not confirmed.
