Losses in WW1

Kingstonian was a 6,564 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. for Frederick Leyland & Co. Ltd. She was attacked on two occastions:

• 11 April 1918: She was damaged by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-68 at position 39° 20' N, 07° 10' E - Caleforte Bay - and was beached there. She was en route from Alexandria to Marseilles with troops and equipment. One seaman died in this attack.
• 29 April 1918: She was torpedoed again and sunk by UB-48 whilst under repair in Carloforte Roadstead. A further seaman died in this attack.

Kintuck was a 4,447 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1895 by Workman, Clark & Co. Ltd. for China Mutual Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and managed by A. Holt & Co. She sank on 2 December 1917. It is not clear from references available to me whether this was from a mine or a torpedo. The loss is reported to have occurred approximately 8 nautical miles North-West by North of Godrevy lighthouse. She was en route from London to Barry Roads in ballast.

Kirkham Abbey was a 1,162 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1908 by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd. for Hull & Netherlands Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by J.H.N. Ringrose. She was sunk on 27 July 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-40 at position 52° 44' N, 01° 42' E - approximately 2 nautical miles North-East by East of Winterton. She was en route from Rotterdam to Hull with a general cargo.

Kish was a 4,928 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1902 by Scott & Co. for Clyde Shipping Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 17 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-67 approximately 160 nautical miles North-West by West of Fastnet. She was en route from Iquique and Norfolk to Newport with a cargo of nitrate.

Kittiwake was a 1,866 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson, Ltd. for Cork Steamship Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 9 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-31 at position 52° 15' N, 03° 18' E - approximately 25 nautical miles North-West of the Maas light vessel. She was en route from Liverpool to Rotterdam with a general cargo.

Knarsdale was a 1,646 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1896 by J. Blumer & Co. for S.Copaitich & Co. as Dunav. From 1911 she was owned by Alexander Bros. and renamed Knarsdale. She sank on 21 December 1915 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-7 approximately 2.75 nautical miles East by South of Orfordneww. She had been en route from Blyth to Sheerness with a cargo of coal.

Kohinur was a 2,265 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1905 by Chas. Connell & Co., Ltd. for Asiatic Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 25 May 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-38 at position 33° 20' N, 29° 50' E - approximately 150 nautical miles North of Alexandria. She was en route from Salonica to Karachi in ballast.

Kosseir was a 1,851 GRT compound-engined passenger/cargo ship completed in 1884 by James Laing for Mexican Navigation Co. as Esteban de Antunano. From 1906 she was owned by Khedival Mail Steamship & Graving Dock Co. Ltd. and renamed Kosseir. She was sunk on 20 July 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-51 at position 31° 45' N, 30° 11' E - approximately 40 nautical miles North-East by North of Alexandria. She was en route from Alexandria to Port Said with a general cargo.

Kul was a 1,070 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1900 by Carmichael, McLean & Co. for D/S I/S Garonne of Oslo as Garonne. From 1917 she was in the hands of the British Government, renamed Kul and managed by Constantine, & Pickering Steamship Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 12 June 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-103 at position 50° 00' N, 05° 46' W - approximately 3.5 nautical miles North-East by North of Wolf Rock. She was en route from Swansea to Rouen with a cargo of coal.

Kut Sang was a 4,895 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1905 by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd. for Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 29 April 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-105 approximately 40 nautical miles East-South-East of Cape de Palos. She was en route from Genoa to Gibraltar in ballast.
