In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. Menapier

Menapier was a 1,886 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by Short Bros. Ltd. for Ghent Lloyd SA as Flandria. From 1911 she was owned by Antwerpsche Zeevaart Mij. and at the time of her loss was managed by Brys & Gylsen, Ltd. She was sunk on 7 June 1915 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-10 approximately 6 nautical miles South of the Elbow Buoy or 2 miles off the Tongue light vessel. She was en route from Algiers to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore.

Menzaleh

Menzaleh was a 1,704 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1888 by Hall, Russell & Co. for J.T.Rennie & Son as Inanda. From 1905 she was owned by Khedivial Mail Steamship & Graving Dock Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 6 June 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-105 approximately 230 nautical miles East-South-East of Malta. She was en route from Alexandria to Bristol with a cargo of cotton seed.

Mercia was a 175 GRT steam trawler completed in 1901 by Cook, Welton & Gemmell Ltd. for East Anglia Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. and registered in Grimsby as GY.1212. She left for the North Sea fishing grounds on 20 March 1915, was posted missing and not seen again.

Mercian

Mercian was a 6,305 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1908 by Harland & Wolff Ltd. for Wilsons & Furness-Leyland Line Ltd. From 1915 she was owned by Fred. Leyland & Co. Ltd. She was damaged on 4 November 1915 by gunfire from German submarine U-38 between Gibraltar and Alboran. She was en route from Southampton to Gibraltar with passengers - she was in use as a troop carrier and there were 17 officers and 300 other ranks on board. The regiment on board returned fire with their machine guns. The ship was damaged and a number of boats were launched without orders or which two capsized. I officer and 37 other ranks lost their lives. Mercian was able to reach Oran and was later repaired.

Mercurius was a 129 GRT dredger completed in 1889 for Tilbury Contracting & Dredging Co. Ltd. She sank on 28 June 1916 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-1 approximately 3 nautical miles South-East of Lowestoft. She was en route from Southampton to Immingham.

Mereddio

Mereddio was a 3,069 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1897 by W. Gray & Co. for Moor Line Ltd. as Olivemoor. Her name was changed to Mereddio in 1906 when sold to SS Mereddio Co. Ltd. She went missing after departure from Quiberon on 10 January 1918 as part of a convoy and en route from Bilbao to Glasgow with a cargo of iron ore. She is believed to have been sunk by German submarine U-84 at position 47° 52' N, 04° 27' W.

Merida

Merida was a 5,951 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1918 by Armstrong, Whitworth & Co. Ltd. for English & American Shipping Co., Ltd. and managed by C. T. Bowring & Co. Ltd. She was damaged on 4 July 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-65 at position 43° 36' N, 08° 15' E - in the Gulf of Genoa. She was en route from Genoa to an unknown destination in ballast. She was towed to Savona and repaired. The ship was wrecked off Le Touquet on 29 December 1918.

She was en route from Barry to Italy with a cargo of coal.

At the time of her loss she was owned by Hall Line Ltd. She was sunk on 11 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-53 at position 48° 38' N, 04° 56' W - approximately 30 nautical miles North by West of Ushant. She was en route from New York to La Pallice with a cargo of steel.
