This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Perla

Perseverance

It has been difficult to confirm the details for Perseverance but I believe she was a 118 GRT sailing vessel. Assuming this is the correct vessel, according to official accounts - [37] - she was captured on 23 September 1917 by a German submarine at a position approximately 14 nautical miles North-West by North from St.Valery en Caux and subsequently sunk by gunfire. The matter is complicated by there being several small vessels with the same name sunk around the same time but this is the closest to the Date of Death recorded for Mr. Deveson.

Persia

Persia was a 7,951 GRT steam passenger ship completed in 1900 by Caird & Co. Ltd. for Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. She was sunk on 30 December 1915 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-38 at position 34° 08' N, 26° 19' E - approximately 71 nautical miles South-East by South of Cape Martello. She was en route from London and Marseilles to Bombay with passengers and a general cargo.

According to Charles Hocking [35]:

The liner Persia, Cdr. W. H. S. Hall, R.N.R., which left London on December 18th, 1915, and Marseilles on the 26th, was 71 miles S.E. by S. of Cape Martello, Crete, on the 30th, when she was torpedoed without warning by the U-38, Lt. Cdr. Max Valentiner. The attack occurred at 1.10 p.m. the vessel being struck on the port bow, and five minutes later the port boiler blew up. She sank in a very short time and 334 of the 501 persons on board were drowned, including Cdr. Hall. Two of her boats were drawn down when she foundered taking all their occupants with them, but four got away in safety. One hundred and sixty seven survivors were picked up, most of them by a trawler 30 hours later, and were landed at Alexandria.
